Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the most important crops called grain legumes, which is divided into two categories of Kabuli and Desi based on seed size, color and shape. The release of the last Desi type variety in Iran dates back to more than four decades ago. In order to achieve a new cultivar with desirable characteristics, local landraces of Desi chickpea of Kurdistan, West Azerbaijan and East Azerbaijan were purified and evaluated through mass selection. Then, grain yield and other traits of selected genotypes were compared with local check varieties, Pirouz and Kaka. Based on the results, 18 accessions or lines whose grain yield and agronomic characteristics were superior to the local checks, were selected to evaluate adaptability and stability. Line IDDUR-2012-12 from Bukan origin (West Azerbaijan province) due to high grain yield, stability and good marketing distinguishes, was released as new cultivar of Desi type chickpea. This cultivar was approved in the cultivar introduction commitee of the Seed and Plant Registration and Certification Research Institute.
