Cereals research department:
Wheat and barley cultivars with different growth habits (winter, spring or facultative) are grown across the country. The low yield in rainfed areas are attributed to several biotic and abiotic stresses, cereals research department addresses the improvements of cereals (bread wheat, durum wheat, barley and triticale) in drylands of Iran, covering all the ecological regions.  The objectives of Cereals Improvement program include:
- Genetic improvement of wheat and barley to develop new cultivars for different agro-ecological zones of the country.
- Study physio-genetic bases of stress tolerance and their genetic manipulation to improve the level of stress tolerance in cereal germplasm.
- Strengthening the collaboration with international partners in material exchange, training and joint projects.
- Production of breeder seed of developed cultivars.
- Transfer of developed technologies and research finding to the private sectors and farmer fields.
